About Us

At Kirsty Purvis School of Dance all of our students have have the opportunity to take exams in RAD ballet, ISTD tap and ISTD modern, perform in our bi-annual dance show and audition to dance as part of the local pantomime at the Norbury Theatre. We also hold regular watching weeks for parents and host a range of 'fun' themed weeks throughout the year!

Exams

Our weekly classes follows the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabi for ballet and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) syllabi for tap and modern. In their weekly lessons, students will learn the necessary exercises and dances to take an exam if they choose. There is no pressure to take the exams, all students will move up with their group regardless of whether they choose to take the exam or not. A great emphasis is placed on classes fostering an enjoyment for dance and the many benefits of attending dance classes.

Exam sessions are held throughout the year which allows students to progress at a pace that suits both them and the class. Students who take exams continue to receive fantastic results and the school maintains a 100% pass rate.

Shows

Every other year we hold a whole school dance show at The Norbury Theatre in Droitwich. Our shows showcase each and every student, giving them all the experience of performing on stage to an audience. Students are looked after backstage by DBS checked chaperones and teachers

Have a look at our gallery to see photos from our previous shows.

Our next show will be held in July 2022! Keep an eye out for more information.

We are very lucky to hold our shows at such a lovely theatre. Click on the link below to find out more about The Norbury Theatre.

Pantomimes

Our dancers are very lucky to have had the opportunity to be involved with The Norbury Theatre's annual pantomime!

Each year we have two teams of junior dancers that perform on alternating nights and a team of senior dancers who take part in every performance. The dancers love having this opportunity to be part of a different sort of performance and it creates a great bond between the younger and the more advanced dancers. The junior dancers portray characters that fit in to each pantomime including woodland animals, rats, fairies, Royal guards and children of the village. Our senior dancers form part of the chorus in addition to having their own featured dances showcasing ballet, tap, lyrical and jazz dance styles.

Other Fun!

In addition to preparing for shows and exams, we have a number of other fun activities to keep the students engaged and learning more about dance.

Recently, we held a craft week where the younger students had the opportunity to hold and decorate a pointe shoe (for display purpose only) that could no longer be used for dancing. The students learnt about the anatomy of the pointe shoe and had chance to ask lots of questions about what it takes to be able to dance en pointe. The older students had chance to learn repertoire from the well known Ballets.

We also hosted both a Halloween and Christmas dress up lesson where students could wear something themed and the lesson had imagery and games tailored to the theme of the lesson.

Our students 'got their strictly on' to raise money for children in need. They created their own dances and explored their creative sides to put movement together culminating in a 'Strictly' style showcase at the end of the lesson.

We love to reward the hard work and progress of our students! Students who impress the class teacher by their hard work, listening skills or any other positive behaviour are awarded 'star of the class' and receive a special gold sticker.

Throughout the year, we invite parents and guardians to watch classes in our designated 'watching weeks'. These allow you to see the progress that your child is making and offer an incite in to what they are learning in classes.
